In a landmark $38 billion partnership, Amazon Web Services (AWS) will provide massive cloud infrastructure to OpenAI, giving the ChatGPT maker access to one of the world’s largest deployments of NVIDIA GPUs. The multi-year deal sent Amazon’s shares soaring 4%, underscoring investor optimism over its growing dominance in AI infrastructure.

In a major boost for artificial intelligence infrastructure, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and OpenAI on Monday announced a multi-year strategic partnership valued at $38 billion, marking one of the largest AI compute collaborations to date.

Under the agreement, AWS will provide OpenAI with advanced cloud architecture to train and deploy next-generation AI models, including future versions of ChatGPT. The infrastructure—built on NVIDIA’s GB200 and GB300 GPUs and Amazon EC2 UltraServers—will support OpenAI’s massive AI workloads, offering low-latency performance and scalable compute power extending to tens of millions of CPUs by 2027.

The large-scale deployment is expected to be fully operational by late 2026 and will serve as the backbone for OpenAI’s global AI expansion.

“Scaling frontier AI requires massive, reliable compute,” said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. “Our partnership with AWS strengthens the ecosystem that will power this next era of artificial intelligence.”

Matt Garman, CEO of AWS, added, “As OpenAI continues to push the boundaries of AI, AWS’s best-in-class infrastructure will serve as a backbone for their ambitions.”

Following the announcement, Amazon’s stock surged 4%, helping lift broader tech indexes as markets cheered the company’s deepening foothold in the fast-growing AI compute segment.

The new partnership builds upon existing collaborations between the two companies. Earlier this year, OpenAI’s foundation models became available on Amazon Bedrock, enabling AWS customers such as Comscore, Peloton, Thomson Reuters, and Verana Health to integrate OpenAI’s technology for analytics, automation, and software development.

With this deal, AWS cements its role as a critical player in the global race to build scalable, energy-efficient infrastructure for next-generation AI systems.
