CBI takes over ‘financial irregularities case’ in RG Kar Hospital

Following a directive from the Calcutta High Court, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the West Bengal Police handed over all relevant documents and papers in the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials on Saturday. The transfer was completed ahead of schedule.

The court order, issued by Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj on Friday, instructed the CBI to assume control of the investigation into alleged financial irregularities at the state-run Hospital. The SIT, which was tasked with facilitating the transition, finished the handover at 9:30 A.M., 30 minutes ahead of the 10 A.M. deadline set by the court.

While directing the CBI to take over the probe into the financial irregularities at RG Kar during the tenure of the former principal Sandip Ghosh, Justice Bharadwaj observed that since the central agency was already investigating the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar, it was better for the same agency to carry out the probe into the charges of financial irregularities at the hospital.

Already, representatives of the medical fraternity have claimed that the ghastly rape and murder had a number of hidden factors.

They claim that there was a probability that the woman doctor was aware of some of the irregularities going on at RG Kar.

The Calcutta High Court has given the investigating agency officials the task to find out whether there is any direct or indirect link between the two cases.

Doubts on this count have been strengthened by the fact that soon after Justice Bharadwaj’s Bench ordered the CBI probe, Ghosh approached a Division Bench of Calcutta High Court challenging the single-judge Bench’s order.

CBI officials have been grilling Ghosh on a daily basis for 12 to 14 hours since August 16 in connection with the doctor’s rape and murder case.

  1. The human rights of the alleged criminals are very important. The stay on the investigation, from single bench of HC to division bench and the story in SC through the lawyers paid for by the tax payer. Why only specific names appear for the alleged criminals, including the politicians. Is that what the blindfold on the eyes of the GODDES of JUSTICE meant for?
