Congress marks single ward gain under strong BJP Delhi wave

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday wins seven of 12 seats in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) by-polls, reinforcing its strong run after a sweeping victory in the February Assembly election.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), ousted from power by the BJP 10 months ago after more than a decade in government, finishes a distant second with three seats. The Congress, which has been struggling, manages to win a seat in Delhi for the first time this year, while the 12th ward is won by the All India Forward Bloc (AIFB).

However, the BJP enters the by-poll holding nine wards and loses two seats—one each to the Congress and AIFB—though this does not affect its majority or control of the House. The party flips Chandni Chowk ward, previously won by AAP in the 2022 civic polls, with Suman Gupta of BJP’s Saffron Party faction Suman Gupta defeating the rival candidate. Meanwhile, AAP wins Naraina ward, previously held by the BJP, and BJP reclaims Naraina from AAP’s 2022 win.

The BJP remains the dominant force in the 250-member House, holding 122 seats, followed by AAP at 102. The Congress now holds nine seats.

The election is seen as the first major electoral test for Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, which she clears comfortably. For AAP, it is the first election for Delhi Unit Head Saurabh Bhardwaj, who retains his political footing, with the party stating it does not lose any wards.

The by-polls cover 12 wards: Greater Kailash, Shalimar Bagh B, Ashok Vihar, Dichaon Kalan, Chandni Chowk, Chandni Mahal, Sangam Vihar A, Dakshin Puri, Mundka, Mundka district, Wards, and Dwarka B. Eleven wards fall vacant after their councillors are elected to the Assembly.

Among BJP’s key holds, Anita Jain retains Shalimar Bagh B ward, previously represented by Rekha Gupta before she becomes Chief Minister. BJP also retains Greater Kailash, Chandni Chowk, and Ashok Vihar.

The Congress’ lone victory comes from Suresh Chaudhary of Congress in Sangam Vihar A. He secures 12,766 votes, defeating the BJP candidate by 3,628 votes. After his win, Chaudhary criticises the BJP campaign strategy, saying:

“The credit goes to the people of Sangam Vihar… Many BJP leaders, including the Chief Minister, campaigned here but did not seek votes based on work—and their strategy failed.”
