BJP, allies eye clean sweep in Assam Rajya Sabha polls
The Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies will field candidates for all three Rajya Sabha seats from Assam that are set to fall vacant in April, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Friday.
Addressing a press conference, Sarma said the ruling alliance is confident of winning at least two of the three seats, with the possibility of securing the third as well. The vacancies will arise following the completion of terms of BJP MPs Bhubaneswar Kalita and Rameswar Teli, along with Independent MP Ajit Bhuyan.
“The BJP, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and our united front will contest all three seats,” Sarma said. “Two seats are confirmed wins for us. The third one could go either way.”
The chief minister explained that the BJP-led alliance had chosen not to field a candidate against Ajit Bhuyan in the previous Rajya Sabha election, believing he would remain neutral and work in the broader public interest. However, Sarma alleged that Bhuyan’s conduct since then, particularly regarding the use of his Rajya Sabha MP funds, had raised serious concerns.
“Last time, we did not contest against him because we thought he would act neutrally and for the good. But what he did with his MP funds is now known to everyone,” Sarma said, alluding to corruption allegations linked to the utilisation of those funds.
The ruling coalition currently enjoys a comfortable numerical advantage in the Assam Legislative Assembly. The BJP has 64 MLAs, while its allies — the AGP, United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) — have nine, seven and three members respectively.
On the opposition benches, the Congress has 26 MLAs, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has 15, the CPI(M) has one, and there is one Independent legislator.
With these numbers, the BJP-led alliance is widely seen as being in a strong position ahead of the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections from the state.
