Anti-Ragging Committee finds students guilty of assault
Nine MBBS students at Dehradun’s Doon Medical College were on Monday suspended and expelled from the hostel for allegedly ragging and assaulting junior students, officials said.
The action was taken against senior students from the 2023 and 2024 batches following the recommendations of the college’s Anti-Ragging Committee, which conducted an inquiry into the incident.
According to officials, the committee found the students guilty of assaulting two junior students inside the college hostel on January 12. Based on the findings, strict disciplinary measures were imposed.
Two of the students were suspended from academic classes for two months and expelled from the hostel and internship for the entire duration of their course. In addition, they were fined ₹50,000 each.
Seven other senior students were suspended from classes for one month and expelled from the hostel for three months, officials said.
The Anti-Ragging Committee has submitted its inquiry report to the Principal of Doon Medical College, Dr Geeta Jain, who reiterated that the institution maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards ragging.
“Doon Medical College is a ragging-free campus, and any form of ragging will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” Dr Jain said.
Uttarakhand Medical and Medical Education Minister Dhan Singh Rawat termed the incident extremely unfortunate and said he had directed the college administration to ensure a thorough probe and exemplary action.
“Such incidents raise serious questions about discipline and order in educational institutions and will not be accepted,” the minister said, adding that strict measures are necessary to deter future violations.
