
2 soldiers attain martyred in twin gunfights in Kulgam
In a major success, a joint team of security forces eliminated at least five terrorists while two of its men attained martyrdom in two back-to-back encounters in the South Kashmir district of Kulgam in the last 24 hours.
In the Jammu region, a soldier was also injured in a terrorist attack near an Army camp in Rajouri district early Sunday morning.
According to ground reports, the terrorists opened fire near the Army camp, and soldiers guarding the post retaliated, resulting in injuries during the exchange.
The terrorists managed to escape after the attack, and the Army and police launched a massive search operation to track down their footprints in the area.
According to Jammu and Kashmir police, encounters started on Saturday were still in progress at the Chinnigam Frisal and Modergam areas of Kulgam district, far away from the National Highway.
According to a Jammu and Kashmir police spokesman the two operations were launched by the security forces on receipt of the specific information about the presence of a large group of terrorists hiding in the area. A group of local terrorists led by a Hizbul Mujahideen commander were trapped at one of the encounter sites.

Drone images of the encounter site revealed the dead bodies of the terrorists lying in a pool of blood at the encounter site. So far there has been no confirmation about the exact number of terrorists killed in both these operations by the Indian Army and the Jammu and Kashmir police.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, V K Birdi, who visited the encounter spot late Saturday evening in Kulgam told reporters that few bodies have been sighted at the encounter spot in Chinnigam, and firing is still going on in the area. “The exact number of terrorists killed or trapped, along with their identities, can only be ascertained once the encounter concludes, but as of now, the fire is ongoing,” he said.
The IGP confirmed that there are fatalities and injuries on the side of the security forces, but the encounters are still in progress.
The first operation was launched in the Modergam area while another operation started after some time in the Chinnigam Frisal area of Kulgam.
During the initial cordon and search operations in Modergam, a group of hiding terrorists opened fire on the team of security forces. The encounter started as the security forces also retaliated. “In the initial exchange of fire, one para soldier was injured and evacuated to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
According to police, two to three terrorists were hiding inside a safe hideout when the operation was launched in the Modergam area late Saturday afternoon. So far one terrorist has been eliminated.
According to sources, at least four terrorists were eliminated in the initial round of firing in the second encounter in the Chinnigam Frisal area of Kulgam.
