Kathua ambush: Security forces launch an aggressive campaign against the terrorists
Four Indian Army personnel, including one Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO), were martyred and six others received critical injuries when a heavily armed group of suspected foreign terrorists Monday ambushed an Indian Army truck near Badnota village of Machhedi in the Billawar tehsil of Kathua district.
The otherwise peaceful precincts of the hilly area were shattered around 3.30 p.m.when an army truck was targeted by a group of terrorists occupying nearby heights with grenades and indiscriminate firing.
The Indian Army jawans reportedly retaliated to contain the terrorists from inflicting heavy casualties.
According to reports, elite paratroopers were heli-dropped near the encounter site to join the anti-terrorist operations.
Additional troops were rushed to the spot from nearby army installations falling under the jurisdiction of 9 corps (Rising Star Corps) of the Indian Army headquartered at Yol Cantonment in Kangra.
This is the second major provocative strike in the last month.
On June 9, nine civilians were killed and 41 others were injured in the Reasi district shortly before Narendra Modi took the oath of office for the third term in office.
An army post was also attacked by another group of terrorists in the frontier Rajouri district early Sunday morning. However, the same was repulsed by one of the alert troopers deployed on sentry duty. Despite receiving injuries the soldier stood his ground and effectively retaliated the fire forcing the terrorists to flee the area.
According to preliminary reports, suspected foreign terrorists ambushed the army vehicle by first hurling a grenade and later opening indiscriminate firing to inflict maximum casualties.
During the heavy exchange of firing several soldiers received injuries. The Indian Army is yet to make an official statement on the provocative terror attack.
According to a spokesman of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, “Exchange of fire between terrorists and security forces was going on in the Machedi area of Kathua district till the time of filing the report. A massive search operation has been launched”.
Senior police and Army officers were supervising the ongoing operation. The Army authorities have issued an advisory to the residents in the area to remain indoors and not to venture out to prevent injuries in the heavy exchange of gunfire.
