Humayun Kabir cries vendetta after police detain his son
Golam Nabi Azad, son of Janata Unnayan Party (JUP) chief and Bharatpur MLA Humayun Kabir, was detained by police on Sunday following allegations that he assaulted a policeman deployed at the legislator’s residence in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district, officials said.
According to police, Azad—popularly known as Sohel—was detained after a complaint was filed by constable Jumma Khan at Shaktipur police station. In his complaint, the constable alleged that he was assaulted earlier in the day when he sought a few days’ leave. “On the basis of the complaint, the accused has been detained for questioning. The matter is under investigation and necessary legal action will be taken,” a senior police officer told PTI. The Trinamool Congress said the incident involved a cognisable offence and asserted that police action was taken strictly as per law, denying any role of the ruling party.
Humayun Kabir, who floated the JUP after being suspended from the TMC and recently announced that his party would contest the upcoming assembly elections, claimed that police cordoned off his residence in the Shaktipur area following the incident. He said he was away when the incident occurred and alleged that his son had been falsely implicated. “My son objected to the entry of a policeman inside my house, which angered the law enforcers. They then levelled false allegations of misbehaviour,” Kabir said, claiming the action was politically motivated.
The MLA further said that law enforcement agencies could not cordon off the residence of an elected representative on what he termed “flimsy pretexts.” Announcing a protest, Kabir said he would gherao the Murshidabad superintendent of police’s office on January 1 to seek an explanation from senior police and administrative officials over the incident.
