Indian NGOs received huge money from many countries

According to the information given by the Union Home Ministry (MHA) to Parliament on Wednesday about foreign donations to NGOs (Non-Governmental Organization) working in India gives a picture of huge money flow to India from many countries. NGOs working in India and registered under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act have received funding of over Rs.50,975 crore from abroad in the last four years with the highest donations of Rs.19,941 crore coming from the United States. Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai informed Rajya Sabha that Rs.15,355 crore was received by about 18,304 NGOs in 2016-17, Rs.16,940 was received by 18,235 NGOs in 2017-18, Rs.16,490 crore by 17,540 NGOs in 2018-19 and Rs.2,190 crore by 3,475 NGOs in 2019-20.

The question was raised by NCP’s MP Dr Fauzia Khan. In a written reply to a question, the Minister said that the highest foreign contribution was received from the United States — Rs.5,869 crore in 2016-17, Rs.6,199 crore in 2017-18, Rs.6,907 crore in 2018-19 and Rs.966 crore in 2019-20. The foreign contributions are received by 18,000 NGOs from about 130 countries on average. There are around 22,400 NGOs in the country registered under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act.

These multinational NGOs pump money from different countries to their India office and then distribute it to India-based NGOs.

The 20-page detailed statistics of the foreign donations that came to India, provided by the Union Home Ministry to Rajya Sabha for the past four years is published below this article. It is interesting to note that the highest donation came to Delhi based NGOs, followed by Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Kerala. Last year, Kerala NGOs became the second-highest receiver of foreign funds replacing Tamil Nadu. The NGOs from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and West Bengal also followed by these top states.

It is widely known that a majority of the foreign funds from NGOs were received by Christian organizations engaged in religious conversion, basically focusing on the tribal belt of India, through their offices headquartered in Delhi, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. These covert NGOs pretend to be performing social service and charity, according to many Intelligence Bureau reports. There are some Corporate houses-floated NGOs also to divert their money in the garb of social-service-type activities. The data provided to Parliament also shows that certain foreign funds came to their India based offices from many countries abroad, which are popularly known as multi-national NGOs. These multinational NGOs pump money from different countries to their India office and then distribute it to India-based NGOs.

After the United States, major funds come from the United Kingdom and Germany. Switzerland, Italy, Netherland, Canada, UAE, Australia, France Spain also are the other top donors to Indian NGOs.
