PM Modi extends congratulations after BNP secures majority in first national polls
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday congratulated Tarique Rahman after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) swept Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections, marking a significant political shift in the neighbouring country.
In a message posted on X, PM Modi said he conveyed his “warm congratulations” to Rahman for leading the BNP to a decisive victory.
“This victory shows the trust of the people of Bangladesh in your leadership,” Modi wrote, adding that India “will continue to stand in support of a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh.”
He further expressed his intent to work closely with the new leadership to strengthen bilateral engagement. “I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multifaceted relations and advance our common development goals,” he said.
BNP heads for commanding majority
The Rahman-led BNP secured a clear edge in the parliamentary contest as counting neared completion. According to available figures, BNP and its allies have won 177 seats out of 237 constituencies where counting has been completed. Vote counting continues in the remaining 62 seats.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its allies have secured 53 constituencies so far.
The election marks Bangladesh’s first national vote since the 2024 student uprising that led to the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her government.
With the BNP poised to form the next government, attention will now turn to how Dhaka recalibrates its domestic and foreign policy priorities, and how India and Bangladesh advance cooperation in areas such as cross-border trade, river water sharing, infrastructure connectivity and regional development.
