Indian envoy reaffirms Jammu and Kashmir as an “integral part of India”
India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Parvathaneni Harish, on Thursday issued a sharp rebuke to Pakistan, urging it to end the “grave and ongoing human rights violations” in areas illegally occupied by it, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking at an open debate of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) held on the occasion of the 80th UN Day, Ambassador Harish reaffirmed India’s long-standing position on the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, stating, “Jammu and Kashmir has been, is, and will always be an integral and inalienable part of India.”
Drawing a contrast between India’s democratic freedoms and Pakistan’s repression, Harish said, “While the people in Jammu and Kashmir freely exercise their fundamental rights, such concepts are alien to Pakistan.”
Calling attention to Pakistan’s governance of its occupied regions, he added, “We call upon Pakistan to end the grave and ongoing human rights violations in the areas illegally occupied by it, where the population is in open revolt against Pakistan’s military occupation, repression, brutality, and illegal exploitation of resources.”
Harish also highlighted India’s global philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — “the world is one family” — as the foundation of its foreign policy and its belief in multilateralism and international cooperation.
“This outlook anchors our worldview and is why India consistently advocates for justice, dignity, opportunity, and prosperity for all societies and peoples,” he said.
Reflecting on the UN’s achievements, Harish praised the organization for its role in decolonization, global peacebuilding, and fostering international cooperation. “The UN has served as a beacon of hope for peace and security, facilitated the emergence of new nation-states in the Global South, and set ambitious goals for social and economic progress,” he noted.
October 24 marks the anniversary of the United Nations Charter coming into force in 1945, following ratification by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council.
