Nikahnama suggests missing Indian pilgrim Sarabjit Kaur converted to Islam and married in Pakistan

An Indian Sikh woman who went missing during a religious pilgrimage to Pakistan has reportedly converted to Islam and married a local man, according to a document that has now surfaced.

Sarabjit Kaur, 52, a resident of Kapurthala in Punjab, was part of a 1,992-member Sikh jatha that entered Pakistan through the Wagah–Attari border on November 4 to mark the 555th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. While the group returned to India on November 13, Kaur did not come back.

A nikahnama, written in Urdu, states that Sarabjit Kaur married Nasir Hussain, a resident of Sheikhupura, around 56 km from Lahore. The document says she converted to Islam and adopted the name Noor before the marriage. The authenticity of the document has not been independently verified.

Kaur is divorced and has two sons with her former husband, Karnail Singh, who has lived in England for nearly three decades. Her passport was issued in Punjab’s Muktsar district.

According to official records, her name does not appear in Pakistan’s exit lists or India’s entry lists, indicating she did not return with the jatha. Upon discovering the discrepancy, the Immigration Department alerted Punjab Police, which has forwarded a preliminary report to central agencies. The Indian mission in Pakistan is also in touch with authorities there regarding her disappearance, according to government sources cited by IANS.

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) sends Sikh pilgrims to Pakistan annually for Guru Nanak’s Prakash Parv. The Indian government had allowed this year’s 10-day pilgrimage after initially denying permission citing security concerns.
