India seals Indo-Nepal border for 72 hours
India has sealed all border points with Nepal for 72 hours starting Saturday evening as part of heightened security arrangements ahead of the second phase of Bihar assembly elections scheduled for November 11.
The move aims to prevent illegal cross-border movement, smuggling, and security violations during the polling period.
The closure affects border crossings in several Bihar districts including Sitamarhi, East Champaran, West Champaran, Madhubani, Araria, Kishanganj, and Supaul.
Authorities confirmed that all international checkposts and local entry points will remain shut till 6 PM on November 11, except for emergency services.
Coordination with Nepalese authorities
Officials said the border sealing has been undertaken in coordination with Nepal’s district administrations, and both sides are on high alert to ensure smooth and peaceful elections.
Joint patrols and information-sharing between Indian Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Nepal Police have been intensified.
Sealing the Indo-Nepal border 72 hours before elections has become a standard operating procedure (SOP) to prevent cross-border disturbances during voting. The same measure is observed during elections on both sides of the border.
Bihar gears up for the second phase of voting
The second phase of the Bihar assembly elections will be held on Tuesday, November 11, across 122 constituencies in 20 districts. Over 3.7 crore voters, including 1.95 crore men and 1.74 crore women, are eligible to vote at 45,399 polling centres.
In the 2020 Bihar election, the BJP won 42 of these 122 seats, while RJD secured 33, JDU 20, and Congress 11.
