Indian security agencies nab two top wanted gangsters operating abroad
In a major breakthrough for Indian security agencies, two of the country’s most wanted gangsters — Venkatesh Garg and Bhanu Rana — have been arrested overseas in coordinated international operations.
Officials confirmed that Venkatesh Garg was apprehended in Georgia, while Bhanu Rana, a known associate of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, was arrested in the United States. Both will soon be deported to India to face multiple criminal charges.
According to officials, this marks a significant success in India’s transnational crackdown on organized crime, as over two dozen major gangsters continue to operate from foreign countries, recruiting youth and running extortion and trafficking networks.
Garg’s global trail: BSP leader’s murder and an extortion syndicate
Investigations revealed that Venkatesh Garg, a resident of Narayangarh in Haryana, was deeply involved in several high-profile crimes, including the murder of a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader in Gurugram.
Garg fled to Georgia to evade arrest and continued his operations from abroad. Authorities said he was recruiting youth from Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, and other northern states, luring them into organized crime.
Sources also confirmed that Garg has been running an extortion racket in partnership with Kapil Sangwan, another India-origin gangster currently based overseas.
In October, the Delhi Police had arrested four shooters from Sangwan’s network for opening fire at a builder’s residence and farmhouse, exposing the scale of their operations.
Bhanu Rana’s U.S. network and Bishnoi gang links
Meanwhile, Bhanu Rana, originally from Karnal in Haryana, was traced to the United States, where he had been living under an assumed identity. Rana is a key operative of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang and is wanted in multiple criminal cases across Haryana, Punjab, and Delhi.
His name surfaced during the probe into a grenade attack in Punjab, which was allegedly orchestrated by his associates.
Earlier this year, the Special Task Force (STF) in Karnal arrested two men carrying hand grenades, pistols, and ammunition, revealing that they were acting on Rana’s instructions from abroad.
Crackdown on global crime networks
Security agencies said the arrests of Garg and Rana represent a major step in India’s ongoing effort to dismantle global crime syndicates operating from foreign territories.
Interpol coordination and intelligence sharing with U.S. and European counterparts played a vital role in tracing the movements of these fugitives.
Officials added that both accused will undergo legal extradition and deportation procedures, after which they will be brought back to India for prosecution.
India’s global crackdown widens
The arrests come amid an intensified push by Indian law enforcement agencies — including the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and state police units — to trace fugitive gangsters and terror-linked operatives operating from Canada, the UK, the UAE, and Europe.
Officials said that the two arrests send a “clear message” that India’s reach now extends well beyond borders, and that no criminal can evade justice under the cover of foreign soil.
