20 children rescued safely after police shoot kidnapper dead in Powai

In a terrifying incident in Mumbai’s Powai on Thursday, twenty children from a private school were held hostage inside a film studio by a man identified as Rohit Arya, who had lured them under the pretext of a talent audition. The Mumbai Police carried out a swift and decisive operation, rescuing all 20 children unharmed after a tense standoff that lasted several hours.

According to police officials, Arya called nearly 100 students to RA Studio in Powai, claiming to conduct auditions for an entertainment project. While most were allowed to leave after the first round, 20 children were locked inside a room, sparking panic among parents and locals.

When the police attempted to enter the premises, Arya reportedly fired at them, prompting officers to return fire. A single police bullet struck Arya, who was rushed to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.

Senior officers said the decision to open fire came only after negotiations failed and the suspect’s actions posed an imminent threat to the children’s safety. “The priority was to rescue the children safely. The suspect was overpowered after a brief struggle,” a Mumbai Police spokesperson said.

All the rescued children were immediately taken for medical evaluation and counselling, with doctors confirming they were unharmed but in shock.

Police sources revealed Arya made strange demands related to “contractual work” and even released a video claiming he “only wanted to talk.” Authorities are now investigating his background, including his alleged involvement in the entertainment industry.

The incident triggered massive panic in Powai, with hundreds of anxious parents rushing to the spot. The Mumbai Police Commissioner praised the swift action of the force, calling it a “model example of quick response and courage under pressure.”

Preliminary investigations suggest Arya planned the fake audition for several days. His exact motive remains unclear, though officials are probing whether he suffered from psychological issues.
