Mark Rutte urges global pressure on Putin, says fallout could hit key economies

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has cautioned that countries continuing trade with Russia—specifically India, China, and Brazil—could face serious consequences, including harsh secondary sanctions. His comments come amid escalating efforts to pressure Russia into peace talks over the war in Ukraine.

Speaking with US senators in Washington, Rutte stressed the urgency of the situation, just a day after President Donald Trump announced a new weapons package for Ukraine and proposed imposing 100% secondary tariffs on nations purchasing Russian exports unless a peace deal is reached within 50 days.

My encouragement to these three countries, particularly, is—if you live now in Beijing, or in Delhi, or you are the president of Brazil—you might want to take a look into this, because this might hit you very hard,” Rutte said.

He urged leaders in Brazil, India, and China to push Russian President Vladimir Putin toward serious negotiations, warning that the economic consequences of inaction would be “massive.”

Concerns over the 50-day ultimatum

Republican Senator Thom Tillis expressed concern about Trump’s 50-day timeline for peace negotiations, suggesting it could be exploited by Russia.

There is a risk that Putin might use the 50 days to escalate the war or secure more territory, only to strengthen his position at the negotiating table,” Tillis said. He emphasized that any gains made during the window should not be legitimized in peace talks.

US and Europe boost military aid to Ukraine

Rutte confirmed that under a new agreement with Trump, the United States would ramp up military support for Ukraine with contributions paid for by European allies. The aid package includes not only air defense systems but also offensive weapons like missiles and ammunition.

When asked whether long-range missiles were part of the support plan, Rutte responded that the weaponry would be “both defensive and offensive,” but that specific details were still being coordinated between the Pentagon, NATO command, and Ukrainian forces.

European commitment to Ukraine

Rutte reiterated Europe’s commitment to ensuring Ukraine is in the strongest position possible going into any potential peace negotiations. “Europe will find the money,” he said, to support both the Ukrainian military effort and diplomatic leverage.

  1. Dancing on the shoulders of Trump the , hope the little Rutte is aware of the reliability of Trump. Mr. Rutte was drinking milk out of the feeding bottle in 60s when US and USSR had a nuclear standoff. Can he imagine the consequences of putting India, China and Brazil under 100% secondary sanctions, forcing them into a single block which will be much powerful than the NATO, in terms of economy, population, military might, technology and commitment for fighting for own and not a proxy war. The comfortably placed Europeans enjoying the welfare state will have no reason to fight a proxy war forced on them by stupid / egoistic leadership.
