Consignment traced to Andhra Pradesh as probe widens into inter-state smuggling network

In a major drug bust, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has seized 320 kilograms of cannabis (ganja) worth nearly ₹2 crore, concealed inside a specially designed cavity of a mini-truck in Chennai. Two people have been arrested in connection with the smuggling operation, officials said on Thursday.

Acting on a specific tip-off, officers from the NCB Chennai Zonal Unit intercepted the vehicle near the Karanodai Toll Plaza on Sunday. Upon inspection, they discovered 150 packets of cannabis hidden inside a concealed compartment built into the truck’s structure.

According to the NCB, the consignment had been transported from Andhra Pradesh to Chennai. The agency identified the arrested duo as the truck driver and another individual who allegedly arranged fake number plates and a forged FASTag to facilitate the transport.
Investigators believe the two men are part of a larger inter-state narcotics network, and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the other members involved in the smuggling operation.

The seizure comes amid growing political debate in Tamil Nadu over rising drug consumption, particularly among the youth. The opposition parties have accused the ruling DMK government of failing to curb narcotics trafficking and claimed that the state is becoming a transit hub for international drug smuggling.

Responding to such allegations, state police and government officials have maintained that no narcotics are produced locally, asserting that drugs are being smuggled in from neighbouring states and that strict action continues against traffickers.

The NCB said the seized truck and contraband have been taken into custody and a detailed probe is underway to uncover the full network behind the operation.
