Bus falls into ravine in Alluri district; nine killed, rescue on

Nine people were killed and several others injured after a bus lost control and plunged into a deep ravine on a hilly stretch in Andhra Pradesh’s Alluri Sitarama Raju district on Friday morning. The accident occurred near Tulasipakalu village.

According to district officials, the bus was carrying 35 passengers, two drivers, and a cleaner. The travellers were on their way from Chittoor to the Sri Rama temple in Bhadrachalam, Telangana.

“All nine victims died on the spot. Seven injured persons have been shifted to the CHC in Chintur, around 15 kilometres from the accident site. Once stabilised, they will be moved to Bhadrachalam,” the district collector said.

Initial reports suggest the bus veered off the road while navigating a sharp bend in the forested ghat section. A senior police officer told PTI the driver may not have seen the curve due to heavy fog, causing the vehicle to skid off the road and roll down a steep slope.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy and announced ex-gratia assistance of ₹2 lakh each for the families of those killed and ₹50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu also expressed shock, spoke to authorities overseeing relief efforts, and directed senior officials to rush to the spot. He instructed all departments to coordinate closely and ensure the injured receive the best medical treatment.
