PM Modi, French President Emmanuel Macron discuss the evolving West Asia crisis

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held a telephone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss the rapidly evolving security situation in West Asia and the need for diplomatic efforts to restore peace in the region.

The conversation comes amid growing concerns that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East could expand beyond the immediate region and affect global stability.

In a post on X after the call, PM Modi said the two leaders shared concerns about the developments in West Asia and emphasized the importance of diplomacy.

“Spoke with my friend President Emmanuel Macron today. We discussed our shared concerns over the evolving situation in West Asia and the need for a return to dialogue and diplomacy. We will continue to engage closely and coordinate efforts towards the early restoration of peace and stability in the region,” he wrote.

    India steps up diplomatic outreach

The conversation with Macron is part of India’s wider diplomatic engagement since the outbreak of the conflict in West Asia. According to officials, Prime Minister Modi has spoken with eight leaders from the region since the start of the military confrontation.

India has been closely monitoring developments as the crisis risks widening and impacting international trade routes, regional security and energy supplies.

Conflict moving closer to India’s strategic neighbourhood

The call between the two leaders also comes shortly after a major escalation involving the United States and Iran. On Wednesday, US forces sank an Iranian naval vessel off the coast of Sri Lanka, bringing the conflict closer to India’s strategic neighbourhood.

The incident has raised concerns about the possibility of further escalation in the wider Indian Ocean region.

    Focus on diplomacy and stability

India and France have traditionally coordinated closely on global security and strategic issues. Both countries have repeatedly called for diplomatic engagement to prevent conflicts from spiralling into broader regional wars.

As tensions continue in West Asia, New Delhi has emphasized the importance of dialogue and peaceful resolution to ensure stability in a region critical to global energy and trade.
