India reaffirms commitment to ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not travel to Kuala Lumpur for the upcoming 47th ASEAN Summit and will instead participate virtually, the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed on Thursday.
In a post on X, PM Modi said he had a “warm conversation” with his Malaysian counterpart, Anwar Ibrahim, during which he extended congratulations on Malaysia’s ASEAN chairmanship.
“Had a warm conversation with my dear friend, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia. Congratulated him on Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship and conveyed best wishes for the success of the upcoming Summits,” PM Modi posted.
He added that he looks forward to joining the ASEAN-India Summit virtually and “further deepening the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.”
Confirming the same, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said on Wednesday that Modi had informed him of his decision to attend the summit remotely due to the ongoing Deepavali celebrations in India.
“We touched on the organization of the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur at the end of this month. He informed me that he will attend virtually due to the ongoing Deepavali celebrations in India at that time,” Ibrahim said.
He also extended festive greetings to Modi and the people of India, saying, “I respect his decision and extended my greetings for a happy Deepavali to him and the entire people of India.”
The 47th ASEAN Summit is scheduled to take place later this month in Kuala Lumpur, with leaders from across Southeast Asia and partner nations expected to participate.
