Prohibitory orders imposed in Tripura’s Kadamtala until Wednesday after clashes

Police in Tripura resorted to opening fire in the air and employing lathi-charge tactics on Sunday to disperse mobs following violent clashes between two religious communities over Durga Puja donation collections in Dharmanagar.

According to police reports, the confrontations resulted in injuries least one person reportedly being killed and several persons being injured including a cop. In response to the escalating violence, the district administration imposed prohibitory orders within the jurisdiction of the Kadamtala police station, deploying a significant contingent of security forces, including the Tripura State Rifles (TSR), to the affected mixed-populated areas bordering southern Assam.

An official from the district administration confirmed that prohibitory orders, enacted under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, would remain in effect until Wednesday in an effort to stabilize the situation and restore peace.

The conflict reportedly erupted over the collection of Durga Puja donations, leading to mutual attacks that intensified communal tensions. Eyewitnesses indicated that mobs vandalized several shops and homes, prompting police to carry out multiple lathi-charges to disperse the crowds.

“Legal action will be taken against those involved in the violence,” a police official stated.

In a post on X, the North Tripura district police announced that the situation at Kadamtala police station had been resolved with the intervention of religious leaders from both communities. They emphasized the importance of compliance with the prohibitory orders, urging residents to avoid gatherings and refrain from spreading rumors or unverified information.

Tensions remained high across Dharmanagar, the district headquarters of North Tripura. Jitendra Chaudhury, the Leader of the Opposition, engaged in discussions with Chief Minister Manik Saha and senior police officials regarding the unrest. Chaudhury, who is also the CPI-M state Secretary, called for the deployment of the Border Security Force and the Assam Rifles to help control the situation.

The district administration continues to monitor the developments closely, working to ensure peace and order in the region.

  1. The physical space for Hindus is rapidly shrinking as recent mob-shows illustrate. Hindus of course are oblivious to this and are more interested in the success (or otherwise) of the Indian cricket teams. No wonder there is not a single political party who will speak up for the Hindus.

  2. India will have tough time in next 10 years controlling internal violence instigated & supported by Pappu party. Modi & Amit Shah (ahimsa policies will not work) – the sooner they realize, that much better. Else BJP should know it will be erased from political scene
