ED raids ex-RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh’s residence in connection with financial scam
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) coordinated raids on four locations on Friday, including the residence of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The ED’s action is part of an ongoing investigation into financial irregularities at the state-run hospital.
Ghosh, who is currently held by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), is under scrutiny in a parallel investigation directed by a Calcutta High Court single-judge bench. Alongside Ghosh’s residence, the ED also targeted the homes of Biplab Sinha, Koushik Koley, and Prasun Chattopadhyay. These individuals are private vendors suspected of benefiting from the alleged financial misconduct at RG Kar Medical College.
At the time of reporting, ED officials had yet to enter Ghosh’s residence and were awaiting access. However, search operations at the residences of Sinha, Koley, and Chattopadhyay were underway. Each raid was supported by Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel.
Sinha is also in CBI custody as part of the broader investigation into the scam. Alongside Ghosh and Sinha, the CBI had previously arrested Ghosh’s bodyguard, Afsar Ali, and private vendor Suman Hazra on September 2.
The ED’s investigation focuses on potential money laundering connected to the financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College. While the CBI’s probe was initiated by court order, the ED’s investigation is suo motu, reflecting the agency’s broader discretion in initiating inquiries.
The distinction between the two agencies’ roles is notable: the CBI requires either state government clearance or a court order to commence investigations, whereas the ED operates with greater autonomy in such matters.
