How DMK’s Sanatan Dharma campaign isisolating Tamil Nadu politically
Has M K Stalin, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, who is also the president of the DMK, bitten more than he could chew? He has become a persona non grata across India, barring his home state. The Hindus in India have turned against Stalin because of his outbursts against them. Recently, Stalin, his son and deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi, and leaders of the DMK and its affiliated parties have intensified their attacks against Sanatan Dharma, the foundational principle of the Hindu religion.
Stalin’s passion for Tamil has landed him in trouble, as was proved on Saturday. Mehbooba Mufti, the former chief minister of Jammu & Kashmir, was asked by a press reporter to speak in English, but she replied in Hindi to a question he posed. “Ask Stalin to speak in Urdu or Hindi. Then I too will switch over to English,” said a visibly irritated Mufti, much to the discomfiture of the journo.
Son Udhayanidhi is on record declaring that Sanatan Dharma was like AIDS and COVID-19 and has to be rooted out from the world. Not to be outdone, A Raja, another leader of the DMK who is the dearest friend of Kanimozhi, used much harsher words to insult the Hindus in the country. It looks like the leaders of the secular parties are vying with one another to play a one-upmanship game in humiliating the Hindus. Though there were many terrorist attacks in the country, these leaders do not react to such heinous crimes.
The DMK and other Dravidian parties are known for their antipathy towards the Hindus. The Justice Party, the precursor to the DMK, went to the extent of congratulating the British military for gunning down nearly 1,500 Hindus who had gathered at Jallianwala Bagh in Punjab on 13th April 1919 to celebrate the Baishaki festival. The Justice Party leaders appreciated the good work done by the British troops under the command of Brigadier Reginald Dyer. Interestingly, it was P Ramamurthy, a CPI(M) leader, who mentioned Jayaprakash Narayan’s happiness over the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in his memoirs.
The DMK thrived all these years because of the appeasement of the minority communities in the state. It is the only political outfit in the country that has a Christian Bishop as party leader. Ezra Surgunam, a Pentecostal Mission Church bishop known for his rabid anti-Hindu views, had exhorted the DMK cadres to eliminate the Hindus wherever they met them. Surgunam made all these comments only in the presence of M Karunanidhi, the DMK patriarch.
The month of December turned out to be highly critical for both the DMK and the Hindus. Stalin denied permission to thousands of Hindus to light up the Lamp Tower at Thirupparankundram near Madurai in connection with the Trikkarthika festival. It is an age- old ritual dating back thousands of years, and for the first time in its history, the State government issued prohibitory orders banning people from gathering over the holy shrine. The Madras High Court issued an order asking the Stalin-led government to withdraw the prohibitory orders and facilitate the lighting of the Tower. But the DMK government, instead of obeying the Court order, stood its ground, and this year’s Trikkarthika festival was not held. Adding insult to injury was the chief minister and other ministers casting aspersions on the integrity of Justice G R Swaminathan, the High Court judge who asked the authorities to facilitate the lighting of lamps at the shrine on the scheduled day. But DMK leaders approached the Parliament Speaker in New Delhi with a request to impeach Justice Swaminathan, who negated the prohibitory orders. They also termed him a Hindu fundamentalist for pronouncing such an order. The judicial fraternity in the country is shocked over the DMK’s stance on this issue and for calling the judge names, an act which is unheard of anywhere in India.
What made Stalin and the DMK go after the blood of the Hindus was the former’s fear of losing the election to the Legislative Assembly scheduled for early next year. The Stalin-led government has, over the last four years, emerged as the most corrupt administration the state has seen. Corruption has afflicted Tamil Nadu, akin to a cancer spreading all over the body. Stalin’s only wish is to anoint Udhayanidhi, his son, as the next chief minister of the state. The DMK boss is suffering a lot due to a serious ailment, the treatment for which he flies away frequently to Singapore and London. His public appearance has been limited, and it is only with heavy make-up that he attends functions. His teeth are all gone, and his speeches have lost coherence. Stalin is struggling to read from the prepared speeches even at party functions. What disturbs him is the strong undercurrents in the DMK as a major section of party leaders have started questioning the impropriety of coronating his family members to important positions. His step-sister Kanimozhi is the Delhi face of the DMK, while grand nephew Dayanidhi Maran is a member of parliament. It is the Karunanidhi clan’s writ that runs in the party.
The launching of Tamilaka Vettri Kazhakam (TVK, Tamil for Victory Party of Tamilakam) by actor Joseph Vijay has jolted Stalin from the slumber. Vijay, son of an evangelist by the name Chandrasekhar, is married to a Sri Lankan Tamil, and the family is die-hard supporters of the LTTE and its late supremo Prabhakaran. What torments Stalin is the chance of Vijay cutting into the votes of his party. Since Vijay is a church-going Christian, Stalin fears that the entire Christian votes are likely to go to TVK candidates.
The recent hike in the number of outbursts by Stalin, his son, and party cadres are with an eye on the minority vote bank. The DMK had declared in the past that the party would love to have a separate Tamil nation, and it is with this in mind that Stalin is supporting the formation of a separate Tamil Eelam consisting of the north and east provinces of the island nation.[1]
The DMK, which stood for a separate Dravida Nadu, was forced to put the demand on the back burner because of an amendment to the Constitution. In 1962, Annadurai had said in the Rajya Sabha that Dravidians want the right of self-determination… “We want a separate country for southern India,” he had said in the Upper House, but the Chinese war led the Centre to make changes in the Constitution. According to the 16th Amendment of the Constitution, which is known as the Anti-Secession Amendment, political parties speaking of seceding from India would not be able to contest elections. Annadurai understood that any more speeches and demand for Dravida Nadu would make him and the DMK ineligible to contest the elections, and hence the party relegated their demand to the back burner, only to strike when the metal is hot.[2]
Stalin had said many times in the recent past that the creation of Dravida Nadu is the avowed mission of the DMK and the party would dust the same from the back burner at the right time. This has been substantiated by the party ideologue K Thirunavakkarassar. The Keeladi excavation by the DMK government to find out archaeological evidence of a separate Dravidian civilization is an attempt by Stalin to claim that Tamil Nadu is a distinct nation. The project to manufacture history through archaeological excavation is shrouded in secrecy. Though the Archaeological Survey of India is the sole authority entrusted with excavations, Stalin, in his bid to prove the existence of a separate Tamil Nation, has kept the ASI at a safe distance from Keeladi.[3]
But the expert committee appointed by the Archaeological Survey of India to review the claims supported by the Tamil Nadu government has rejected the findings as ambiguous and non-transparent. Eminent Archaeologist K K Mohammed, whose findings on Ram Janmabhoomi and Ibadat Khana (Place of Worship) built by Emperor Akbar in 1575, has questioned the findings of the Keeladi excavation. “It does not look convincing. Certain parameters qualify the findings of an excavation as scientifically true. But in this case, the findings are not up to the mark. Let them excavate more and deploy more archaeologists for the same,” said Mohammed,
While Stalin is busy engaged in the Dravida Nadu mission, Tamil Nadu has got entangled in many issues. The Kaveri River Water sharing with Karnataka has not yet been solved. Many farmers in the Kaveri Delta region, the rice bowl of South India, have left farming and moved to other areas. Tamil Nadu youth have fallen by the wayside in their attempt to get into India’s civil service because what is taught in universities in the state is below the qualifying standards of the Union Public Service Commission.
Leaders of the DMK, which believes in a casteless, creedless, and religion-free society, travel across the state in SUVs affixed with the pictures of Stalin and Lord Muruga on the windshields!
