Maharashtra Politics: NCP Finalises Sunetra Pawar, Parth Pawar Roles
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has finalised Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar as its candidate for the upcoming Baramati Assembly by-election. The decision was taken at a key party meeting held on Tuesday, sources said.
The Baramati Assembly seat fell vacant following the sudden death of former Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP chief Ajit Pawar in a plane crash on January 28. His demise triggered a major political and organisational shift within the party.
In the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections, Ajit Pawar had retained the Baramati seat with a decisive margin of 1,00,899 votes. He secured 1,81,132 votes, defeating his nephew and NCP (SP) candidate Yugendra Pawar, who polled 80,233 votes.
Sunetra Pawar, who stepped into a prominent political role following her husband’s death, currently serves as Deputy Chief Minister in the Mahayuti government in Maharashtra. She is also the leader of the NCP legislative party.
Parth Pawar nominated to Rajya Sabha
At the same meeting, the party leadership finalised Parth Pawar’s nomination to the Rajya Sabha. He is set to replace his mother, Sunetra Pawar, in the Upper House.
Elections to seven Rajya Sabha seats from Maharashtra are scheduled to be held on March 16. The move is seen as part of a broader strategy to consolidate the party’s organisational and legislative leadership following recent developments.
Sunetra Pawar likely to be elected NCP national president
Meanwhile, the NCP is set to elect its new national president on Thursday (February 26). The election is scheduled to take place at the Worli Dome in Mumbai, with party MLAs, MPs and senior office-bearers expected to be present.
Party sources confirmed that Sunetra Pawar’s name will be formally approved as the national president. Her elevation comes in the wake of Ajit Pawar’s death, after which the leadership unanimously agreed on her name for the top organisational post.
The series of decisions marks a significant transition phase for the NCP, with Sunetra Pawar assuming both electoral and organisational responsibilities as the party moves to stabilise and reposition itself in Maharashtra’s evolving political landscape.
