CJI-led bench to hear on 20th August
The Supreme Court will pronounce on Tuesday its verdict in a suo moto case concerning the right to privacy of adolescents in the wake of “sweeping observations” made in a Calcutta High Court ruling advising “adolescent girls to learn how to control their sexual urges.”
The Supreme Court’s decision comes amidst the broader context of a high-profile rape-murder case involving a Kolkata doctor that has deeply unsettled the nation and caused upheaval within the medical community. The matter will be reviewed by a three-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud.
The case is already being heard by the Calcutta High Court, which, during a hearing last week, ordered that the probe be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation or CBI, overriding the state government’s Sunday deadline to the police.
The prime suspect is Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police who was stationed at the police outpost at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and had access to all departments.
He was arrested on the basis of CCTV footage that showed him entering the building where the doctor was found murdered. A Bluetooth headset found next to the victim’s body was seen on his neck in the CCTV footage. It was found to be paired with his phone as well.
The gruesome rape & murder of doctor
The 31-year-old doctor was murdered early on the morning of August 9.
After a 36-hour shift, the second-year postgrad had gone to an empty seminar room alone on Thursday night to get some rest. The hospital has no on-call room. Apparently, she had dropped off to sleep there.
A four-page postmortem report revealed that the doctor was throttled to death, with her thyroid cartilage broken due to strangulation and a deep wound found in her private parts. Sources indicated that the rape and murder likely occurred between 3 am and 5 am on August 9.
Her partially clothed body, bearing multiple injuries, was found there the next morning.

Waking up too late when evidence is destroyed. Supreme Court is a burden on the country. Time to demolish this institution. Will SC put garland on Mumtaz Begum ? It is a shame on SC & Mumtaz Begum for total inaction on this brutal rape of a qualified medical doctor.
How can one think of such heinous crime on any woman ?
SC has taken sou moto cognizance of the rape and murder of the doctor which is good, because it proves that the Goddess of Justice may have a Patti on her eyes but in ths case she is not deaf and dumb. SHORT OF DISMISSING THE GOVERNEMENT EVERY THING ELSE IS A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY. In a country of 140 CR, rapes and murders will happen but what cannot be allowed to happen is the COVER-UP and the axe must fall on that at highest level. Hope we see some action and not more of observations, comments, sermons.
What do the people approach the courts for JUDGEMENTS or ADVICES ?
