Sri Lanka thanks India for ‘swift support’ amid fuel shortages

Sri Lanka has received 38,000 metric tonnes of fuel from India as supply disruptions caused by the West Asia conflict continue to strain global energy markets.

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake thanked New Delhi for its “swift support” during the island nation’s energy crisis.

In a post on X, Dissanayake said the fuel shipment arrived in Colombo after discussions with Indian leaders.

“Spoke with PM @narendramodi a few days ago about the fuel supply disruptions Sri Lanka is facing due to the Middle East conflict. Grateful for India’s swift support. 38,000 MT of fuel arrived in Colombo yesterday. My thanks also to EAM @DrSJaishankar for his close coordination,” he wrote.

The fuel assistance followed a recent phone conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Sri Lankan president on the energy challenges arising from the ongoing conflict between the US-Israel alliance and Iran.

Modi said the two leaders reviewed progress on India-Sri Lanka energy cooperation and reaffirmed their commitment to work together to address regional challenges.

According to the High Commission of India in Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka has faced severe fuel supply disruptions as traditional suppliers in West Asia and Singapore were unable to meet contracted deliveries due to the conflict and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

The emergency shipment was arranged through Indian Oil Corporation Limited and its subsidiary Lanka IOC.

Officials said the consignment includes 20,000 metric tonnes of diesel and 18,000 metric tonnes of petrol, helping Sri Lanka maintain continuity of fuel supply amid the crisis.
