Incident comes amid escalating conflict between Afghanistan and Pakistan
At least 400 people were killed and around 250 injured in an alleged Pakistani airstrike on a hospital in Kabul, Taliban officials said on Tuesday, even as Pakistan denied the claims.
Taliban alleges hospital strike
According to Afghan officials, the strike hit a drug rehabilitation hospital in Afghanistan’s capital around 9 pm local time, causing extensive damage to the 2,000-bed facility.
Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid condemned the attack, accusing Pakistan of targeting civilian infrastructure and calling it a “crime against humanity.”
Pakistan denies allegations
Rejecting the accusations, Pakistan termed the claims “baseless” and said no hospital was targeted.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the military conducted “precision airstrikes” aimed at specific military installations in Kabul and the eastern province of Nangarhar.
He stated that the strikes targeted “technical support infrastructure and ammunition storage facilities” linked to militant activity.
Conflict intensifies along border
The reported strike comes amid escalating tensions between the two countries, with recent exchanges of fire along the border marking one of the deadliest phases of conflict in years.
The violence began in late February following cross-border strikes and has since disrupted a ceasefire brokered by Qatar last year.
Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has described the situation as an “open war,” signalling a sharp escalation in hostilities.
