Total electorate drops to 5.67 crore after Special Intensive Revision, says Chief Electoral Officer
The Election Commission of India has released the final electoral roll for Tamil Nadu following the completion of a Special Intensive Revision (SIR), with over 74 lakh names removed from the state’s voter database.
Tamil Nadu’s Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik announced the updated figures at a press conference in Chennai, while District Election Officers shared district-wise data earlier in the day.
Voter strength declines to 5.67 crore
Before the revision, Tamil Nadu had 6.41 crore registered voters. After the update, the total electorate stands at 5.67 crore.
According to the final roll, the state now has:
- 2.77 crore male voters
- 2.89 crore female voters
- 7,617 third gender voters
Officials said the deletions followed scrutiny of applications and verification of records during the claims and objections period.
Over 4 lakh deletion requests
Between December 19, 2025 and January 30, 2026, more than 4.38 lakh applications seeking deletion of names were received. Of these, over 4.23 lakh entries were removed after due verification.
The Commission said the exercise aimed to ensure that the electoral roll remains accurate and up to date.
Supreme Court direction on transparency
Following directions from the Supreme Court of India, election authorities had earlier displayed names flagged under “logical discrepancies” at gram panchayat offices, ward offices and other public locations. This allowed citizens to verify details and file objections where necessary.
Assembly polls ahead
Tamil Nadu is among the states heading for Assembly elections this summer. Besides Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Puducherry and Assam are also scheduled to go to the polls during the same period.
