Central agencies grill the people arrested
Tamil Nadu Police have detained six Russian citizens and three Indians in the vicinity of the Kudankulam nuclear reactor plant.
Besides six Russians including a woman, two Tamil Nadu natives and a Keralite from Thiruvananthapuram were also taken into custody by the police.
According to news agency IANS, a senior police officer said, the individuals were taken into custody on Monday evening following reports from local residents about the presence of foreigners near the nuclear reactor premises.
Sources in Tamil Nadu Police told IANS that the Central agencies have commenced quizzing those in custody. The Thiruvananthapuram native, according to police, is the driver of the cab in which the Russians came.
The Kudankulam nuclear power project in Tirunelveli, Southern Tamil Nadu, originally commissioned with Russian support, remains a significant site of public interest and controversy.
Commissioned amid strong opposition in March 2022, the project currently hosts two 1000 MWe nuclear reactors, with plans underway for an additional four reactors in the region.
Looking ahead, the planned expansion of four more reactors at Kudankulam underscores the strategic importance of the site in meeting India’s growing energy demands.
The Kudankulam project remains a focal point of both local and national discussions on energy policy and development.
