Sniffer dog Phantom killed in anti-terror operation

The Indian Army Tuesday eliminated all three Pakistani terrorists without suffering any major collateral damage in the 24-hour-long anti-terrorist operation going on in the Batal area of Akhnoor since Monday morning. The terrorists were hiding in the basement area of a local temple in the area. During the operation, a valiant Indian Army dog Phantom made a supreme sacrifice while discharging his duties.

White Knight Corps in a post on X acknowledged the supreme sacrifice.
As our troops were closing in on the trapped terrorists, Phantom drew enemy fire, sustaining fatal injuries. His courage, loyalty, and dedication will never be forgotten. In the ongoing operation, one terrorist has been neutralized and war-like stores have been recovered so far,’’ a post by White Knight Corps on X said.

Phantom was over four years old with Belgium Malinois breed. He was posted on duty on August 12, 2022, from RVC Centre Meerut, a Defence spokesperson said while saluting his sacrifice.

The Indian Army had deployed BMP-II, an infantry combat vehicle along with elite commandos of the National Security Guard to flush out these terrorists.

Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) of the Indian Army, drones, and helicopters were also deployed on ground zero to carry out the surveillance in the thickly forested areas.

Nagorta-based White Knight Corps Tuesday posted on X, “All Three hardcore terrorists eliminated post intense firefight.

The operation was halted late Monday evening.

“After round-the-clock surveillance throughout the night, an intense firefight unfolded this morning, resulting in a significant victory for our forces. Relentless operations and tactical excellence have led to eliminating three terrorists”, White Knight Corps posted.

The operation also saw the successful recovery of war-like stores, marking a critical step in maintaining security in the region.

According to ground reports a heavily armed group of Pakistani terrorists had infiltrated inside the Indian territory from across the line of control in the wee hours of Monday.

Their suspicious movement was detected by the local villagers in the Batal area near a temple. A group of children also came in contact with these terrorists as they demanded a mobile phone to possibly contact their local guide.

According to reports, the terrorists targeted an army ambulance passing through the area which led to the exchange of firing on Monday morning.

One terrorist was neutralized by the security forces on Monday afternoon.

A targeted attack on an army ambulance was the third such attack after the formation of the Omar Abdullah-led government on October 16. Seven construction workers including a local doctor were killed in the attack on October 20 near Sonamarg. On October 24, two soldiers and two porters were killed in an ambush near the Bota Pathri area of Gulmarg in the Baramulla district.

Briefing media persons after the operation was called off, Maj Gen, GoC 10 Infantry Division, Indian Army, Sameer Shrivastava said “When these people (terrorists) were detected, we received information from the village and hence our reaction was quick. Their purpose for which they had come wasn’t fulfilled and hence they opened fire at our convoy… The way terrorists were armed, we believe that they were here for a big purpose. Terrorist organizations had also posted that they were planning to do something big. Hence, we were prepared, and all the organizations including intelligence agencies were working in coordination…”

Maj Gen Sameer Shrivastava further said, ” We have used unmanned vehicles, artificial intelligence that gave us quick and successful results. We lost one Army Dog – he was ahead when we were doing search operations, and terrorists fired upon the Dog. It’s due to his sacrifice, many of the lives could be saved. After this operation, such information was spreading that the Army had used BMP – we had used that kind of vehicle because the area was tough – with a gradient of 30 degrees and dense forest – we used those vehicles after locating terrorists to reach there.
