Viral food contamination video leads to arrests in Uttar Pradesh
The Ghaziabad Police have arrested the owner and a cook of a local eatery after a video allegedly showing the cook spitting on dough while preparing chapatis went viral on social media, officials said on Wednesday.
The arrests were made by the Kavinagar police following a complaint filed by Acharya Shivakant Pandey, priest of the Shiv Mandir in Govindpuram. The video, which sparked widespread outrage online, was reported to have been recorded on January 19.
After receiving the complaint, police inspected the eatery, located around 50 metres from the temple, and questioned those associated with the establishment.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Kavinagar) Suryabali Maurya said the eatery owner, identified as Amzad, failed to provide a satisfactory explanation during questioning. He also admitted that no action was taken against the cook, Faizan, even after the video surfaced.
Following the inquiry, both Amzad and Faizan were arrested on Tuesday and subsequently sent to jail. Further investigation into the matter is underway, police said.
