India’s diplomatic leverage: US sees potential in urging Putin to end Ukraine conflict
White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre said on Tuesday that India’s relationship with Russia gives it the ability to urge President Vladimir Putin to end its war with Ukraine.
Jean-Pierre made the remarks after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Putin that the death of innocent children was painful and terrifying, a day after a lethal strike on a children’s hospital in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv.
Earlier, highlighting the significance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Russia, the US emphasized that while India engages with Russia, Washington would encourage India to emphasize that any resolution to the Ukraine conflict must adhere to the principles of the UN Charter, respecting Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
US Department of State Spokesperson Matthew Miller during a media briefing said, “Prime Minister Modi, like Prime Minister Orban, recently met with President Zelenskyy, and we view this as a significant move. We encourage India, along with other nations interacting with Russia, to ensure that any resolution to the Ukraine conflict adheres to the UN Charter and honors Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.”
“India is a strategic partner with whom we engage in open and honest discussions, including our concerns about its ties with Russia,” he said.
Miller further said that the US welcomes people engaging with Russia about the war in Ukraine if they make clear to Russia that it needs to respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
PM Modi was in Moscow at the invitation of President Putin and will on Tuesday attend the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit.

Are the American thinking that Modi will urge Russia to end the conflict on the US terms? The conflict can end in 24 hours if the NATO agrees to and tells the Ukraine to to keep quiet that there has to be a ceasefire first followed by talks. The media controlled narrative of painting the Russia as the aggressor that has to be defeated is not going to work. NATO with all its economic and military might has only made monkeys of themselves.
