Centre to coordinate with states as West Asia war enters fourth week
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with chief ministers of all states and union territories on Friday to review India’s preparedness and response measures as the conflict in West Asia enters its fourth week, sources said on Thursday.
The meeting is expected to focus on coordination between the Centre and states to deal with any potential economic or security impact of the crisis, with officials stressing the need for a unified approach under the spirit of “Team India.”
PM chairs CCS meeting on crisis
Earlier this week, Prime Minister Modi chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) to assess the implications of the conflict in West Asia and review contingency plans if the crisis continues.
During the meeting, the prime minister directed officials to ensure that Indian citizens are protected from the potential fallout of the war.
Officials presented a detailed briefing on measures aimed at mitigating the economic impact, particularly on farmers. The government is exploring steps to ensure the availability of fertilisers and maintain stable supply chains for key sectors.
Focus on energy and supply stability
The prime minister also reviewed the functioning of power plants across the country and instructed officials to ensure that there is no disruption in electricity supply.
In a post on X, Modi said the government had discussed short-, medium- and long-term measures, including diversifying import sources, maintaining fertiliser supplies for farmers and exploring new export destinations.
India pushing for safe passage through Hormuz
Speaking earlier in Parliament during the ongoing Budget Session, Modi reiterated India’s call for resolving the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.
He noted that the war has made navigation through the Strait of Hormuz — a critical route for global oil shipments — increasingly difficult.
“Since the war began, the movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz has become very challenging. But despite these circumstances, our government is working through dialogue and diplomacy to ensure safe passage for Indian vessels,” Modi told lawmakers.
He added that the government is making continuous efforts to ensure that oil and gas supplies reach India without disruption, helping maintain economic stability despite the ongoing crisis.
Poll-bound states to skip meeting
States where Assembly elections are scheduled will not be part of the meeting due to the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) currently in force.
These include West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and the union territory of Puducherry.
Sources said a separate meeting with chief secretaries from these poll-bound states will be organised soon.
According to the election schedule, polling in Kerala, Assam and Puducherry will take place on April 9, while Tamil Nadu will vote on April 23. Voting in West Bengal will be held in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with counting scheduled for May 4.
