Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday emphasized the urgent need for peace and stability in Eurasia and West Asia, addressing the 19th East Asia Summit. He highlighted that ongoing global conflicts are adversely affecting countries in the Global South and called for solutions rooted in dialogue rather than warfare.
During his speech, PM Modi underscored the importance of a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region for fostering peace and prosperity. He stated, “The peace, security, and stability of the South China Sea are vital for the entire Indo-Pacific.” He advocated for adherence to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to ensure freedom of navigation and airspace while proposing the creation of a robust Code of Conduct that respects the foreign policies of regional nations.
Reflecting on his message of peace, PM Modi remarked, “I come from the land of Buddha, and I have repeatedly said that this is not the era of war. Solutions to problems cannot come from the battlefield.” He called for respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and international laws, stressing the need for a humanitarian approach through dialogue and diplomacy.
In light of ongoing conflicts, including the situation in Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas war, he reiterated India’s commitment to fulfilling its role as a global partner, stating, “Fulfilling the responsibility of ‘Vishwabandhu’, India will continue to contribute in every possible way.”
PM Modi also addressed the threat of terrorism, urging nations that believe in humanity to collaborate in combating this serious challenge to global peace. He extended condolences to those affected by Typhoon Yagi, which recently impacted Southeast Asia and South China, and highlighted India’s humanitarian efforts through Operation Sadbhav.
He reaffirmed India’s support for ASEAN unity and its central role in India’s Indo-Pacific vision, noting the parallels between India’s ‘Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative’ and the ‘ASEAN Outlook on Indo-Pacific’. He called for constructive engagement regarding the situation in Myanmar, advocating for steps toward restoring democracy while ensuring humanitarian assistance.
