
India’s first Uniform Civil Code to be Implemented in Uttarakhand next year
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced that Uttarakhand will implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) starting January 2025, making it the first state in India to do so after independence. He stated that all preparations have been completed, and the state is ready to execute the law as planned.
During a meeting of the Uttarakhand Investment and Infrastructure Development Board (UIIDB) at the Secretariat on December 18, Dhami highlighted that the state government has made necessary preparations to implement the UCC, fulfilling its earlier resolution.

UCC Bill passed by the State Legislative Assembly
On February 7, 2024, the UCC Bill was passed by the State Legislative Assembly. Following this, a five-member expert committee chaired by retired judge Ranjana Prakash Desai was formed to provide recommendations. Based on these recommendations, the UCC Bill was finalized, and after receiving the President’s assent, its notification was issued on March 12, 2024. The rules under the Uniform Civil Code, Uttarakhand 2024 Act have been finalized, ensuring that the state is fully prepared for implementation.
Training and online services for public convenience
Chief Minister Dhami emphasized the importance of training officials tasked with implementing the provisions of the UCC and ensuring the necessary facilities are in place. He also highlighted the development of a dedicated portal and mobile app to provide online services such as registration and appeals, ensuring ease of access for the public.
Empowering women and children
Dhami noted that the UCC law in Uttarakhand is aligned with the principles of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, and will offer transformative opportunities for society. He emphasized that the legislation would particularly empower women and children in Devbhoomi, providing new avenues for their growth and development.
