Bihar polls: CEC Gyanesh Kumar urges voters to treat elections as a “festival of democracy”
The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to announce the schedule for the high-stakes Bihar Assembly elections at 4 pm today. The press conference will be held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, the poll body said in an official release.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar had earlier confirmed that the elections for Bihar’s 243 Assembly seats would be completed before November 22, when the current Assembly’s term expires.
Several political parties have urged the Commission to conduct polling soon after the Chhath Puja festival at the end of October, citing that many migrant workers return home during that time, which would help improve voter turnout.
Addressing the media earlier, the CEC announced key changes for the upcoming polls, including a cap of 1,200 voters per polling station. Candidate photographs, previously printed in black and white, will now appear in colour on ballot papers and electronic voting machines to enhance voter clarity.
Responding to Opposition criticism over the recent Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in the state, Gyanesh Kumar defended the move, stating that voter list revisions before every election are mandatory and reviewing them afterward would not comply with the law.
Starting his remarks in Bhojpuri, the Chief Election Commissioner appealed to voters to actively participate in the democratic process. “We congratulate the voters of India. Thank you for the successful SIR process. I appeal to all voters of Bihar to celebrate this festival of democracy with the same enthusiasm as the Chhath festival. Everyone should vote and ensure their participation,” he said.
