PM Modi praises Netanyahu’s leadership as India welcomes the peace plan, facilitating hostage release and troop withdrawal
India on Wednesday welcomed the US-brokered peace agreement between Israel and Hamas, which aims to secure the release of hostages held in Gaza and initiate a phased withdrawal of Israeli troops from the war-torn region. The deal, confirmed by US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier in the day, is being seen as a significant breakthrough toward ending the conflict that has engulfed the Middle East since 2023.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a post on social media, praised the development and expressed hope that it would bring relief to civilians in Gaza while paving the way for long-term peace.
“We welcome the agreement on the first phase of President Trump’s peace plan. This is also a reflection of the strong leadership of PM Netanyahu. We hope the release of hostages and enhanced humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza will bring respite to them and pave the way for lasting peace,” Modi said, tagging both leaders in his message.
Under the agreement, Hamas is set to release all remaining hostages, while Israel will begin pulling back its troops to beyond an agreed-upon boundary, President Trump said in his announcement.
Describing the development as a “great day” for both Israel and the Arab world, he lauded the efforts of negotiators who helped broker the truce. Netanyahu hailed the deal as a “diplomatic success” and a “national and moral victory” for Israel, crediting the outcome to the country’s military resolve and US support.
“From the beginning, I made it clear — we will not rest until all our hostages return and our goals are achieved. Through steadfast resolve, powerful military action, and the great efforts of our friend and ally, President Trump, we have reached this critical turning point,” the Israeli Prime Minister said.
The peace accord comes nearly two years after Hamas launched a surprise attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, triggering one of the bloodiest conflicts in the region’s history.
In the first phase of the agreement, Hamas will reportedly release 47 remaining hostages — both alive and deceased — in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. The deal also includes provisions for increased humanitarian aid to Gaza.
With India joining the chorus of international support for the truce, the focus now shifts to whether the agreement will hold — and whether it can mark the beginning of a more stable and peaceful chapter in the Middle East.
