AIIMS Relieves Dr A.K. Bisoi of Duties Amid harassment probe

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has suspended Dr A.K. Bisoi as the head of its Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) department following a complaint of sexual harassment and workplace intimidation filed by a female nursing officer.

The move comes after a series of complaints from the AIIMS Nurses’ Union, which were later escalated to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). The union accused Dr Bisoi of using vulgar and derogatory language towards female staff and creating a hostile work environment.

According to an official order issued by AIIMS Director Dr M. Srinivas, the charge of the CTVS department has been handed over to senior professor Dr V. Devagourou “with immediate effect, till further orders.”

The order referenced a complaint filed on September 30, 2025, by a female nursing officer, along with multiple representations from the Nurses’ Union dated September 30, October 4, and October 7.

“In view of the complaint received… the Director has assigned the charge of Head of the Department of CTVS to Dr V. Devagourou with immediate effect, till further orders,” the official statement said.

In a letter sent to the PMO on October 9, the Nurses’ Union alleged that Dr Bisoi had repeatedly used “vulgar, unprofessional, and derogatory language” toward female nursing staff. The complaint also accused him of retaliation and intimidation, claiming that he threatened to “teach a lesson” to those who had spoken out against him.

“This amounts to workplace bullying and sexual harassment. Nurses now fear reprisal for raising genuine concerns,” the union’s letter stated.

Sources said that the matter has been referred to the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) for further investigation. While Dr Bisoi has been relieved of his administrative responsibilities, he continues to serve as part of the institute pending the outcome of the inquiry.

Senior faculty members described the suspension as a rare move in recent years against a department head over allegations of misconduct.

The AIIMS Nurses’ Union welcomed the decision and expressed hope for a transparent probe.

“We trust that the administration will ensure accountability and uphold the dignity of the nursing community,” a union representative said.
