Almora bus tragedy leaves seven dead
At least seven people were killed and around 12 others injured after a passenger bus plunged into a deep gorge in Uttarakhand’s Almora district on Tuesday, police said.
The accident occurred in the Bhikiyasain area when the bus, travelling from Dwarahat in Almora district to Ramnagar in Nainital, lost control and fell into a gorge about six kilometres ahead of Bhikiyasain, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Devendra Pincha said.
According to the police, there were around 18 to 19 passengers on board at the time of the incident. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle while navigating the hilly stretch, causing the bus to veer off the road.
Rescue and relief operations were launched immediately after information about the accident was received. Teams from the local police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rushed to the spot and carried out evacuation efforts.
The injured passengers were pulled out of the gorge and shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. The condition of some of the injured is said to be serious.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, while efforts are ongoing to ensure medical assistance and support to the victims and their families.
