Helicopter took off from Badrinath at 1:12 pm and lost radar contact near Joshimath two minutes later
All six people on board a helicopter that went missing on a flight from Badrinath to Dehradun have died after the aircraft crashed, Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA) Chief Executive Officer Prateek Jain told ANI on Friday.
Chamoli Superintendent of Police Surjeet Singh Panwar said the Trans Bharat Aviation helicopter took off from the Badrinath civil helipad for the Sahastradhara helipad at about 1:12 pm. Two minutes later, at 1:14 pm, its transmission link with the radar was lost near Joshimath. He said personnel at a nearby Army post saw the helicopter heading into the valley about one kilometre above the Bhandakand Temple near Pandukeshwar.
The aircraft was carrying a pilot, Himanshu Sabharwal of Delhi, and five passengers from Karnataka, Panwar said. The authorities have not released the passengers’ names.
Two search teams of police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Army personnel were sent from Pandukeshwar and Joshimath, and a drone was deployed from Gopeshwar to help. The search followed rain and snow across parts of Uttarakhand, with the state’s district administrations on alert for the weather.
The cause of the crash has not been established.
