Uttarakhand helicopter search on as rain and snow hit Chamoli

A helicopter carrying six people, five passengers and a pilot, went missing on Friday while flying from Badrinath to Dehradun, and a search is under way in Chamoli district.

The helicopter, reportedly operated by a company named Charlie X-Ray, lost contact near Hathi Parvat (Hathi Pahad), close to Joshimath. The district administration has sent an aerial search team in another helicopter to locate it.

The incident comes amid bad weather. Rain and snow have been reported in several parts of Uttarakhand, and Kedarnath Dham saw its first heavy snowfall of the season after continuous snowfall since Thursday, with temperatures dropping sharply.

Dr C.S. Tomar, Director of the Meteorological Centre in Dehradun, said rain is expected to continue for the next few days, especially in the hill districts. Heavy rain was recorded at eight to nine places on October 29, mainly in Uttarkashi, Tehri and Haridwar. He said the chances of rain would be higher in Kumaon on Friday, with light to very light rain likely in the hill districts on October 31, and at isolated places in the northern hills on November 1 and 2.

District administrations have been put on alert. On Thursday, District Magistrate Prashant Arya ordered the District Emergency Operations Centre to be activated in alert mode to monitor the weather and precautions. Authorities are also watching road conditions and the Gangotri and Yamunotri shrines through live CCTV cameras. The administration has asked pilgrims to take precautions against the cold and follow advisories.
