Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday accused the Congress of handing over Assam’s land to infiltrators for electoral gains during its decades-long rule in the northeastern state, asserting that unchecked illegal immigration had eroded the region’s identity, ecology and institutions.

Addressing a rally in Nagaon district, Modi said infiltration “kept increasing” under Congress governments, with illegal immigrants allegedly encroaching upon forests, wildlife corridors and traditional community lands.

“The Congress handed over Assam’s land to infiltrators for votes. This is why infiltration kept rising for decades,” the prime minister said. “The BJP government is protecting Assam’s identity and culture by evicting infiltrators who had illegally encroached upon land.”

Modi said the Congress had lost public trust due to what he described as its “negative politics”, while the BJP had emerged as the “first choice” of voters across the country.

“People trust the BJP for good governance and development. In Bihar, voters gave us record votes and seats even after 20 years in power,” he said.

Referring to recent electoral outcomes, the prime minister said the BJP’s growing footprint was evident in the Maharashtra civic polls and even in Kerala, where the party has secured a mayoral post. “This shows that people across regions are backing our development agenda,” he added.

The prime minister was in Nagaon to lay the foundation stone for the Rs 6,957-crore Kaziranga Elevated Corridor and to virtually flag off two Amrit Bharat trains. He said the elevated corridor would provide safe passage to wildlife during floods in the Kaziranga region.

Modi also highlighted conservation efforts in Assam, stating that no rhino was killed due to poaching at Kaziranga National Park in 2025. “India has shown the world that ecology and economy can move forward together,” he said.

He said Assam’s rapid development was creating opportunities for the entire northeast and that the Act East Policy would take the region to new heights. “The projects launched in Assam have strengthened the BJP’s mantra of development,” the prime minister said.
