Probe ordered after students from Zilla Parishad school in Chandrapur district fall ill; most reported stable

Nineteen students from a Zilla Parishad (ZP) school in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district were hospitalised after allegedly consuming an excessive dose of anti-anaemia iron tablets without supervision, officials said on Friday.

The incident was reported from Bhamdeli village in Bhadravati tehsil. Authorities have ordered a probe into the matter.

According to officials, students are routinely administered iron tablets every Monday as part of the anti-anaemia programme. However, some students reportedly consumed additional tablets on Tuesday when teachers were not present.

On Wednesday night, 19 students complained of nausea, dizziness and feeling “extremely unwell.” The school administration alerted emergency services, and ambulances transported the students to Chandrapur District Hospital.

Ashok Katare, District Health Officer of the Zilla Parishad, confirmed that all 19 students were admitted for treatment.

Doctors said that 16 students are currently in stable condition, while three remain under observation.

ZP Chief Executive Officer Pulkit Singh has ordered a high-level inquiry to ascertain the circumstances that led to the incident, officials added.

Authorities are examining supervision protocols and medicine distribution procedures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
