
‘Tea is the soul of Assam’: PM Modi engages with tea garden workers
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday visited the Monohari Tea Estate in Dibrugarh, Assam, where he spent time interacting with tea garden workers before heading to election rallies in Gogamukh and Behali.
During the visit, the Prime Minister met 19 women workers and spent nearly half an hour engaging with them. In a symbolic gesture, he plucked fresh tea leaves and placed them in a traditional basket, highlighting the significance of Assam’s tea industry.
He also listened to the workers’ concerns, discussing issues such as education, healthcare, and wages. The visit included a traditional Jhumur dance performance by the workers, which the Prime Minister watched and appreciated.
Taking to X, Modi shared his experience, saying: “The plucking of tea leaves was followed by the women talking about their culture and of course a selfie!”

“We are very proud of the efforts of each and every tea garden family. Their hardwork and perseverance have enhanced Assam’s pride. Here are some more glimpses from a tea garden in Dibrugarh,” he added.
Calling tea “the soul of Assam,” the Prime Minister said the state’s tea has earned global recognition and described his interaction with the workers as a “very memorable experience.”
Rajen Lohia, owner of the Monohari Tea Estate, said the visit was a proud moment for the estate.
“Its a great experience for us. PM Narendra Modi at around 8.45 am went to Monohari tea garden interacted with the women’s of the garden and he plucked tea leaves. For half an hour, he interacted with them and try to knows about them. I am very happy that I am also the part of that moment. He just a humble and nicely talked with the workers,” he said.
“PM Modi yesterday, came to Monohari resort and stayed the night here. We are very much happy and can’t express our feelings,” he added.
Workers at the estate expressed excitement over the rare visit.
“We never imagined that a Prime Minister of India will came to our garden and interact with us. Its a life time experience for us and we are very happy,” said one worker.
The Prime Minister later departed for Mohanbari Airport to continue his campaign schedule, where he is set to address rallies in Gogamukh and Behali.
