Blaze at SHP platform brought under control swiftly; all injured stable, says company

A fire broke out at an offshore installation of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) in the Mumbai High field on Friday evening, leaving 10 personnel with minor injuries.

According to the company, the incident occurred around 17:45 hours at the SHP Platform, part of its Mumbai High Asset located in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Mumbai.

Fire contained, injured under medical care

ONGC said its emergency response teams acted quickly to bring the blaze under control and extinguish it. All injured personnel are receiving medical treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.

The company added that operations at the offshore installation have since been normalised.

Key oil field, critical to India’s energy supply

The Mumbai High is one of India’s most important offshore oil fields and a major contributor to the country’s energy production. The SHP platform plays a vital role in supporting exploration and production activities in the region.

    Cause under investigation

ONGC has not yet disclosed the cause of the fire but highlighted that the swift containment reflects the effectiveness of its safety and emergency protocols.

Experts note that while offshore platforms are equipped with advanced firefighting systems, such incidents can still pose serious risks due to the complex and hazardous nature of operations.

    Safety focus reiterated

The company said further updates will be shared as needed and reaffirmed its commitment to workforce safety and uninterrupted energy supply. The incident underscores the operational challenges in offshore oil and gas production, where even minor disruptions can have significant implications.
