Gunman assaulted while intervening; one arrested, two detained as probe continues
Shashi Tharoor’s convoy was allegedly attacked in Kerala’s Malappuram district on Friday evening during an election campaign, prompting police to register a case against five people.
The incident occurred when Tharoor reached Wandoor to campaign for AP Anil Kumar. According to reports, a group of individuals on bikes intercepted the convoy, verbally abused security personnel, and later assaulted Tharoor’s gunman, who subsequently filed a complaint.
Convoy chased, vehicle blocked
Police said the group allegedly chased Tharoor’s convoy and blocked his vehicle near Chellithode in Wandoor around 7 pm. The attackers reportedly attempted to approach the MP, leading to intervention by his gunman, who was then assaulted.
Authorities confirmed that one person, identified as Umar from Kalikavu, has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Two detained, vehicles seized
Two other suspects have been detained, and police have seized two vehicles allegedly used by the group. A case has been registered against five individuals as part of the ongoing investigation.
Officials said the suspects are currently being questioned to ascertain the sequence of events and identify others involved.
Motive unclear, probe underway
Police have not yet confirmed whether the attack was politically motivated. However, initial assessments suggest the group may have deliberately attempted to create a disturbance.
Authorities said the exact motive behind the incident will become clear only after detailed interrogation of the accused.
