Talks held on sidelines of SCO meet focus on stability, military communication and improving ties after LAC tensions

India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday met his Chinese counterpart Dong Jun in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers’ meeting.

During the meeting, the two leaders discussed regional security, stability, and ways to strengthen military communication channels between India and China.

The interaction comes as both countries look to stabilise relations that deteriorated sharply following the 2020 military clashes along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh.

Rajnath Singh, who has been serving as India’s defence minister since 2019, arrived in Bishkek on Monday, where he was received by local officials.

Ahead of the visit, Singh had said he would hold bilateral meetings with defence ministers of SCO member states and also engage with the Indian community in the Kyrgyz capital.

“Shall highlight India’s commitment towards global peace, amidst the security challenges prevailing in the world, apart from conveying India’s consistent stance on Zero Tolerance for Terrorism and Extremism,” he said in a post on X.

The SCO Defence Ministers’ meeting this year is taking place against the backdrop of ongoing global tensions, including conflicts involving the United States, Israel and Iran. Discussions are expected to focus on ways to address regional instability and minimise wider impact.

India has consistently maintained that disputes should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also engaged with global leaders, advocating for de-escalation and peaceful resolution of conflicts.
