    Police suspect attempt to plant explosive device; probe underway with forensic teams on site

    A suspected attempt to plant an explosive device ended in a fatal blast near a railway track in Patiala, Punjab, late Monday night, with the accused dying in the explosion, police said.

    The blast occurred around 10 pm on a freight-dedicated railway line near Patiala. A body was recovered from the site, prompting a detailed investigation by multiple agencies.

    According to police officials, the individual believed to be planting the explosive device was killed during the detonation. The force of the blast severely disfigured the body. No other casualties or significant property damage were reported.

    Senior officers, including the Deputy Inspector General and the Senior Superintendent of Police, rushed to the scene soon after the incident. Teams from the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF), along with forensic experts, were deployed to examine the site and collect evidence.

    Speaking to ANI, Patiala SSP Varun Sharma said, “The person who was trying to carry out the attempted detonation died during it. His body has been recovered. No other casualty or damage to property occurred. We are gathering all the scientific evidence from the spot, including a SIM card, and kickstarting a technical investigation. We hope to unravel this entire conspiracy very soon.”

    Authorities said a technical probe has been initiated, and multiple agencies are coordinating to determine the motive and possible links behind the incident.

    Previous similar incident

    Earlier in January, a blast occurred on a railway track in Sirhind in Punjab’s Fatehgarh Sahib district. The incident, reported on January 24, left a loco pilot injured.

    The injured driver, identified as Anil Sharma, was operating a train on a footplate inspection from Gobindgarh towards Sirhind when the explosion took place.

    At the time, some unverified social media reports linked the blast to a banned outfit, but police did not confirm these claims and initiated an investigation.

    Deputy Inspector General of Police Nanak Singh had said the loco pilot sustained minor injuries and was out of danger.
