The government said India has sufficient petrol, diesel and LPG supplies despite global disruptions caused by tensions in West Asia
A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to citizens to conserve fuel, the government on Monday clarified that India is not facing any shortage of petrol or diesel and urged people not to panic.
At the same time, the Centre stressed the importance of energy conservation in view of the ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia and the continuing conflict between the United States and Iran.
Addressing an inter-ministerial briefing on the situation in the Middle East, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary (Marketing and Oil Refinery) in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, acknowledged that global supply chains have been affected, resulting in significant volatility in international oil prices.
However, she assured that India’s fuel supply situation remains stable.
“Adequate stocks of petrol and diesel are available, and LPG supplies for domestic cooking purposes are being maintained,” Sharma said.
She added that Indian refineries are functioning at optimum capacity and there have been no reports of dry-outs at retail fuel outlets across the country.
Providing details on LPG distribution, Sharma said that over the past three days, 1.26 crore LPG cylinders had been delivered to households against 1.14 crore bookings.
She also noted that commercial LPG sales crossed 17,000 tonnes during the same period, while Auto LPG sales exceeded 762 tonnes.
The clarification comes amid growing concerns over global energy markets following escalating tensions in the Middle East, a region critical to global crude oil supplies.
