Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday departed for a five-nation diplomatic tour that will take him to the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy between May 15 and May 20.

The visit is aimed at strengthening India’s strategic partnerships in areas such as trade, technology, energy security, innovation and green growth while expanding engagement with both Europe and the Gulf region.

PM Modi will begin the tour in the UAE, where he is scheduled to hold talks with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, discussions will focus on investment, trade, energy cooperation and important regional developments.

Ahead of the visit, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation Reem Al Hashimy praised PM Modi and described him as a “true treasure” for the UAE leadership and its people.

She said India-UAE ties are prepared to reach “new mountaintops” in trade and technology, adding that regular high-level interactions have significantly strengthened bilateral cooperation.

Industry bodies in India have also welcomed the visit. The Federation of Indian Export Organisations said the tour comes at a crucial time and is expected to provide fresh momentum to India’s trade and investment partnerships with Europe and the Gulf.

The organisation said Indian exporters could benefit from new opportunities in sectors such as engineering, clean energy, pharmaceuticals, logistics, textiles, digital trade and technology.

During his visit to the Netherlands from May 15 to 17, PM Modi is expected to meet Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima.

Talks between the two countries are likely to focus on semiconductors, green hydrogen, water management, defence cooperation and emerging technologies as India seeks to deepen innovation-driven partnerships with European nations.

The broader five-nation outreach is being seen as a major diplomatic effort to strengthen India’s strategic presence across Europe and the Gulf amid growing global economic and geopolitical challenges.

Several new agreements and partnerships across trade, technology, energy and climate-related sectors are expected during the visit.
